Monitor what matters

Be intentional about what you monitor. Have a reason for every metric.

What metrics should you monitor for your system?

Free disk space? RAM usage? CPU utilization? Requests per second? Failed requests per second? Revenue per day? Active users? There are thousands of things you could monitor!

How do you choose what’s important?

Analysis paralysis is real.

Actually, let me rephrase something, to see if it helps:

There are an infinite number of things you could monitor.

Does that provide clarity?

Hopefully that framing helps make it obvious that you can’t monitor everything. Therefore, you must choose what to monitor.

That’s an excercise for another day. For now, let me just make the point bluntly:

Be intentional about what you monitor. Have a reason for every metric.
