So when SHOULD you hire?

Only hire after identifying your constraints, and determining that a new person is the likely solution.

If a large number of companies suffer from hiring too many people, how do you know when you should hire someone?

I have a process I like to follow, that’s pretty simple to describe, but of course a lot harder to actually do.

  1. Make your constraints visible.
  2. Identify the biggest constraint(s) in your process.
  3. Work to eliminate or mitigate these constraints given the resources and people you currently have.
  4. If, and only if, you determine that adding new skills, or new human capacity is actually likely to mitigate your constraint, then hire.
