Join me (virtually) at PyCon Australia, September 10-12

I'll be speaking (virtually) at PyCon Australia about the incident that kicked off my career in DevOps.

I’ve been invited to speak at PyCon Autralia this year, which is pretty exciting. Less exciting than if it were happening in person, and I had a good excuse to travel to Australia. But the online version of PyConAu means you can join from anywhere in the world! Tickets start at just AUD$10 for studends, and are quite reasonably priced for everyone else, so if you use or are interested in Python, this could be a great event for you!

I’ll be talking about my start in DevOps:

The Butterfly Effect

How a single bit changed my career

I relate the story of a single bit gone wrong back in 2006, which launched my career on a new trajectory of root-cause analysis, continuous improvement, and DevOps.

In 2006 I had just started a new job when a bad release brought every one of our hundreds of customers mail servers to its knees. In this talk, I’ll walk through a high-level “incident postmortem” of this event, the lessons I (and my team) learned, and how this years-ago incident changed my career and paved my way toward DevOps.
